Mine ran as you describe after I used power washer and got water in the carburetor. I drained some gas through the drain plug, squirted a little ether in the air filter then started it. After a little bit or sputtering it cleared up then I added a couple of ounces of Berryman B-12 Chemtool into the gas tank. That fix helped me.
